The MultiTasking Attendee
Nothing is more frustrating than leading a training session only to have several people blatantly texting on their PDA, reading the latest Us Weekly, or even taking a phone call during your event. You can take steps to manage multitasking behavior. Don’t become visibly frustrated. Try these best practices instead.

o Use a “technology drop box” at the front of the classroom and agreeing to drop in all phones, etc. prior to start of the session

o Agree on a mild punishment for violators (e.g. one group suggested that the instructor can answer any ringing phones, another group suggested anyone caught texting must sing a stanza of Take Me Out to the Ballgame)
? Use facilitation techniques that keep participants actively engaged:

o Affinity diagramming
o Sub team work
o Dot voting

Have you ever kicked off your shoes after leading a particularly difficult training session and wanted to just give up! Leading training sessions can be great when you’ve got an energized group that’s ready and willing to contribute to the discussion, asks probing questions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and absorbs the material like a sponge. Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most trainers have had the grueling experience of dealing with difficult attendees that seem to thwart the best laid plans. Indeed, it is amazing how one truly problematic attendee can dampen and even destroy the learning experience for the entire group. The good news is that there are very effective methods trainers can use to manage these challenging personalities. We will explore four of these most common challenging personalities and provide you practical techniques you can use to manage them effectively. If you are a trainer and you haven’t yet encountered these personalities, please take notes because you will!

One of the best facilitation tools you can use is the development of Ground Rules. Write, post, and review ground rules at the beginning of the session and ask for the group’s buy in on them. Explicitly ask if there are any ground rules listed that someone can’t buy into. Certain ground rules should be proposed to serve as a support system for you should you encounter difficult attendees. Sample ground rules might include the following:

The Wet Blanket Attendee
We’ve all experienced the person who is always whining, “But, that’ll never work in my environment!” This constant whining/negativity can certainly undermine the effectiveness of the training. Remember these tips the next time you encounter a “wet blanket”.

“The Know It All”
Most trainers have encountered the “know it all” at one point or another. This attendee insists (either explicitly or more passively) that they are an expert on the topic (to which I always wonder to myself “why are they taking the training?”), and they are insistent on demonstrating that expertise throughout the course of the training event. They may go out of their way to challenge the trainer, dominate class discussion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pose questions specifically designed to stump or trick the trainer, pose much more advanced questions clearly beyond the scope of the course, or contradict the trainer during sidebar conversations with their tablemates or others attending the training event. Here are a few suggestions for dealing with “The Know it All”.
Keep in mind that no one technique will be effective with every attendee. Your arsenal of techniques should be as varied as the different personalities you will encounter. Our intention is not to provide the silver bullet (because there obviously isn’t one); instead, we offer a wide variety of techniques that will hopefully expand your facilitation toolbox. Your challenge is to decide which tool will work best in each situation. Remember that if you’re bothered by a difficult attendee, others most likely are as well. As the training facilitator one of your roles is ambassador on behalf of all attendees. Don’t make the mistake that so many trainers make of sticking your head in the sand and hoping that difficult attendee simply gets lost coming back from the restroom and never returns. Take a deep breath, smile, and use these techniques….THEY WORK!
? Acknowledge their expertise (if you feel they do have valid points) and call on them to comment occasionally. Don’t be at all intimidated if an attendee clearly has expertise in the topic area. This person could be a great “go to” person to help provide examples, offer opinions/input from their work environment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], share war stories, etc. Remember that you attract more bees with honey than vinegar so avoid any temptation to be confrontational. The “Know it All” can become a great asset to you if you manage them correctly ?

If they’re offering valid comments but maybe dominating the conversation a bit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reiterate/validate their comment by writing it visibly for all to see, and then ask for other ideas to complete the list. (e.g. “Steven, it sounds like you’re suggesting that we use approach x in this scenario…is that correct? That’s a great suggestion. Let’s compile a list of several suggestions, then discuss them all. We’ll list your suggestion as “A” on the list. I’d like to get at least three other suggestions from the group. What do others think?”)
? If they’re offering comments that you don’t necessarily agree with, avoid the temptation to argue with the attendee. I’ve found that there are very few black and white answers in the workplace; instead there are more shades of grey. If they are offering “expertise” that you feel is incorrect, thank them for their feedback and ask for other’s input (e.g. “Steven, that’s an interesting idea/approach/suggestion. What do others think about that idea? What have you found that works well in your environment?”) Note: If they suggest something that is clearly incorrect or ill-advised, let the group know that you disagree (and offer alternate suggestions) to ensure the group doesn’t absorb erroneous information.
? If they explicitly challenge you on a point, acknowledge the validity of your point but ask them to elaborate on their experience as well and summarize both experiences with the group. (e.g. Steven, although we’re recommending that the project team develop their project charter within the first two weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it sounds like that might be challenging in your environment. Tell me more about what has worked better in your environment….So, to summarize the key take aways from this conversation for the larger group, I would certainly recommend that you strive to document the project charter within the first two weeks or so; however, recognize that there could be situations like Steven’s (where he was leading an international project disrupted by a major reorganization days after the project start) where that may not be practical. That’s certainly reality so it’s great to not only discuss the best practice but also take a look at how we might react during extreme conditions as well.)
? Use the round robin technique (go around the room asking each person to share a comment) and start at the opposite end of the table from the know it all (e.g. “This is such an important issue that I want to be sure I’m getting everyone’s ideas. Let’s do a quick round robin starting with Jill…”)
? Take a break and solicit the know it all’s support offline (“Steven, you’ve brought up several key points. Thanks for that input! I’m hoping to get some of the other team members involved in the discussion to hear their ideas as well. Some members of the group are not as assertive, but I want to be sure we hear from them.”)
The Vacuum (sucks up all your time wanting you to solve his problems at work)
You know this attendee. They are very engaged with tons of questions because they’re dealing with this exact issue on their job right now and they want you to fix it for them! The vacuum attendee is dangerous because they may want you to spend an hour explaining every detail of a topic you’d only allocated ten minutes for. They may also have a laundry list of questions and impede others’ ability to ask their questions. You might be tempted to avoid them or shut them down abruptly. Don’t do it. Instead, try these techniques.

Thank them for their zealous participation and acknowledge the time allocated for that section (e.g. Carrie, it sounds like you’ve worked a lot with business plans; unfortunately, I need to closely monitor our time to ensure I can get everyone out by 4:00 as we committed. Since we’ve spent about 30 minutes on this section,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can we possibly hold that question until the end of class so I can be sure we’ve made it through all the material)?
? Ask them to place their question on the parking lot (Carrie, we’re running short on time for this section, but I don’t want to miss your question. Would you mind jotting it down on a sticky note and placing that on the Parking Lot so I can review it at our next break?)
? If they’re asking questions beyond the scope of the course or going into more detail than intended ask the group if others are interested in more details/examples and offer to discuss it in more detail during break or after class. (e.g. Carrie, it sounds like you’ve worked a lot with business plans; unfortunately, if we go into detail on the financial calculations, it’ll take about thirty additional minutes of class time. If there’s interest in that, I’m more than happy to take the time to do it, but I don’t want to rush through it. I’ll review those calculations for anyone who is interested right after class ends. Anyone else interested?)
? If you feel they’re dominating the questioning, ask for questions from others. (e.g. We’ve gotten great questions from this side of the room, but the other side has been somewhat quiet. What questions do you guys have?)

Parents want the best for their children: shelter, food, friends, educational and life
opportunities. Yet sometimes, even through a parent’s best intentions, children stray from the desired behavior. Bullying, a dangerous and yet all too common behavior, is typically seen in children who have witnessed or been the victim of aggressive acts. Bullying behaviors include picking on those physically weaker or younger; verbally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], physically, or mentally assaulting a peer; or spreading rumors about others either in person or online. People often believe bullies are not social, but this is not true: A bully might have many friends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though these friends may demonstrate similar aggressive traits.

If your child has become aggressive, moody, depressed, or withdrawn, or if he is displaying bullying type behaviors with peers, pets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or family members,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seek a professional’s help. School counselors and child psychologists can offer excellent tools for dealing with aggressive children. Addressing this behavior early on can prevent it from becoming worse and can ultimately save many hurt feelings, and possibly a life.
Ways to Stop Your Child from Bullying Others
If you feel your child has become increasingly aggressive, or if you have observed bullying-type behaviors (picking on those younger, hitting or kicking children or adults, being cruel to animals or other children), you should:
1. Immediately address the issue. Dr. Seiler writes in his essay “Cruelty
Free Kids: Twelve Ways NOT to Raise a Bully” that a parent should never
turn a blind eye to bullying, even when time is limited. If your older daughter shoves your younger son while you are busy packing lunches and trying to get everyone out of the door, stop what you are doing and the behavior then. “You simply can’t ignore bad behavior, no matter how small the infraction is or when it occurs,” Seiler writes. “Children must be held accountable. Show your disapproval, even at an early age, and let them know it will not be tolerated.” Allowing a behavior to continue is, by default, reinforcing that behavior. It is a parental responsibility to stop children from being cruel to others. A parent who
knows their child has been abusive to others but ignores this behavior is in fact encouraging it.
3. Set an Example. Teach your child through your actions. If you say,
“What a stupid answer that boy gave to that question,” your child learns it
is acceptable to talk negatively about others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. When you push another adult
in an altercation at the grocery store, your child sees aggression is acceptable. If you have an issue with rage when you get upset, your child learns acting out when frustrated is okay. Look at the way you react in various situations, and teach yourself techniques for coping with aggressive behaviors or negative statements if you find they are a problem.
2. Teach Why Bullying is Wrong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Seiler goes on to say you must explain
to your child why the actions were wrong and then show how it would be
devastating to the person to whom it occurred. If you feel your child must
be controlling in most situations (has to pick the game played,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], must dominate conversation, must choose all friends playing a game), talk to him. Explain everyone must have a turn being the leader. If the behavior continues, set consequences and follow through.
5. Role-play appropriate social interactions. Dr. McIntosh says, “Usually a bully doesn’t have language to learn to ask for help,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or to engage in some healthy social situations.” Show your child how to do this by setting up scenarios and acting them out, so that when something similar happens child will have appropriate responses.
Parents may not realize their child has been assaulting others until they receive a phone call from the victim’s parents or teachers; yet certain behaviors may have been exhibited prior to the attacks. Dr. Warren B. Seiler Jr., author of Battling the Enemy Within,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], states bullies almost always have a lower self-esteem and so make themselves feel better and more powerful by putting others down. “A lack of empathy can lead to increasing mistreatment of others,” he adds. Other signs your child may display that can signify bullying behavior include:
Destruction of property
Skipping school
Aggressiveness towards siblings or parents
Unfound anger
Depression
Rages
Extreme mood swings
Dr. Helen McIntosh, author of the children’s book Eric, Jose & The Peace Rug
and creator of The Peace Rug curriculum, states that nearly every child who bullies has been a victim of aggressive behavior at one time. The Columbine boys responsible for killing schoolmates had been taunted in school for three years prior to the shootings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Cho Seung Hi, the murderer of 32 victims at Virginia Tech shooting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was also teased in his earlier school years. “There is a “principle of patterning” that takes place when someone is bullied,” says McIntosh. “If one doesn’t find one’s voice to respond to a bully – one stuffs the rage, focuses on the bully – and becomes LIKE the bully.”

4. Teach Empathy. A child who cannot ‘see’ the other person’s feelings will
not understand why picking on someone is so damaging. A 1992 study showed that a baby, when listening to another baby’s cry of distress, are more likely to cry, but this sense of empathy will not continue to grow if a parent does not follow up. Parents must teach empathy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and this can be done through talking about the feeling (“The way you helped the lady open the door was very kind; you must have known she was struggling.”); show examples of empathetic behavior (help an animal in distress, or volunteer for those less fortunate); talk about your child’s feelings after a difficult situation (“How did you feel when Mary said she didn’t like your shirt?”); show how what your child says may hurt another (“How would you feel if she had called you that name?”).

With the divorce rate often reported at 50%, it becomes ever more important to focus on the behaviors that keep a positive feeling between you and your romantic partner or spouse and refrain from the behaviors that damage that lovin’ feeling.
These four behaviors are guaranteed to increase negative feelings and damage the relationship. If you find that you are engaging in these behaviors, it is vital to decrease your reliance on them.
John Gottman the noted marriage expert talks about four horsemen that degrade the positive feeling between two people. These include blame, stonewalling, defensiveness and contempt.
• If your partner concedes a point, are you acknowledging it? John Gottman talks about repair bids - that is when your partner is reaching out to you, trying to diffuse the tension, offering an olive branch, cracking a joke. Make sure you receive the repair bid. If you refuse, you are sending the message, this relationship cannot be repaired and it is short path to divorce.
Here are some tips to pull back from these behaviors:
• Examine your own needs and be clear about who can meet them. Sometimes we expect our partners to meet all of our needs and that is unrealistic. Are there friends, relatives or colleagues who can meet needs that your partner might not be well suited for such as interest in certain activities or hobbies.

Blame – assigning fault to another. When we blame others, it becomes important to ask the question of ourselves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have we communicated our own needs and can the other person deliver on what we need. Sometimes we expect more of our partner than what is reasonable. Or we blame them for something they don’t even know about. In relationships there is mutual responsibility. Where do you hold responsibility?
Stonewalling – refusing to answer. Stonewalling can include such behaviors as withdrawing from the conversation, being silent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], storming out of the room. When we stonewall, we disengage and refuse to participate in discussion. While postponing the conversation might be a good tactic to diffuse the tension, constant stonewalling means you don’t want to engage. Even if you are in a state where you don’t feel you can talk, it is best to say, I can’t talk about this right now but let’s get to a calmer state and we will talk about it in the next two days (give a time period that is reasonable).
Defensiveness – challenging or avoiding criticism - comes in when we feel threatened and feel the need to protect ourselves. If you are feeling defensive, ask yourself the question,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what is your part in this situation that you don’t feel you can admit to.
Contempt – feeling that a person is beneath consideration or worthless. Showing contempt, that you do not respect your partner is truly a damaging approach. It is corrosive and a sure fire way to send the message,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I don’t like or love you anymore.
• If you are feeling defensive, where can you admit some responsibility? In a relationship, it is important to be vulnerable. If you cannot be vulnerable, what do you need in the form of assurances or tone etc. You can ask your partner to phrase criticism in a way that you can better receive it. If you don’t like criticism at all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what do you need to do to be better at receiving feedback as this is a core skill for life.
